Happy Holidays

Well another semester down, hope you all did well in your classes. Our last meeting was interesting. We talked a little about what we could show next year and then we watched Ghost in the Shell. So far this break, we have already picked up two new series and hope to get a few more so that we can increase our variety for next semester. Well hope you all have a merry Christmas, and a happy New Years. We hope to see you all next semester at our first meeting which will hopefully be held on the 20th of January, in the same room at 5:00 pm since this seemed to be a good time for many people. If you would like to meet at a different time let me know and i will see what we can do to accomidate everyone.

Have a nice break!

Eigth Meeting

This was one of the last meetings of the year so we tried to decided on something to show for the last three meetings, but that did not go so well. It seemed to me from the discussion that the six of us had that most people only want to see stuff that either has little talking and all action or they just want to see a girls cheast bounce for most of the time. This is something that distrubes me a little cause that is not what makes up a good anime in my opinion. Four of the people that show up regularly like an anime that has a good storyline and keeps your attention even if that means that there is little action or sexual inuendo. Another thing is that one person wanted us to start showing things that are current and up to date and not series that were made in the 90's. The only problem that i have seen with this is that a lot of the series that peole want to see are not yet out intierly on DVD. This means that we could begin watching on of these series but would not be able to finish it untile the DVD's are obtainable. As mentioned in the beginning of the year we are not able to watch fansubed anime fromt he internet because that according to SGA and Copyright laws is illegal.

Well, after having a discussion we watched the first three episodes of Soul Taker. I am not sure if we are going to continue wathing this series this week due to the fact that it is a confusing series and if you miss an episode it is very difficult trying to get into it. Another reason is that we have ten episodes left and only two weeks to show them, unless peole want to have a meeting on the Friday of finals, which is fine with me. If you would like to read up on the first three episodes just in case, you can go to....http://www.animenfo.com/anime/episode/display.php?id=395&n=agitwc&t=soul_taker, or.....http://www.scifi.com/sfw/issue251/anime.html. You can even find your own site that has a good description of it and if you think it is more beneficial then the ones i have posted, let me know and I will put it up for all to see.
We will be having a meeting this week even though some of the members will not be there because of the Renisaunce festival and other events. We can do several things at this meeting. One, we can continue to watch Soul Taker and try to get as far as we can in it so that we can maybe finish it by the end of the semester. Two, I will bring in a movie collection by the writter of Ghost in the Shell and we can watch a movie or two of his.

Three, we can just talk about what we would like to do at the last meeting and what we should show next semester as our first series of 2006 so that i can go out and get it over the break and have it ready to go. One idea I had was possible picking up Beserker because it fits the criteria of a show people wanted to see. It has lots of blood and action, good story line, and some mature sexual inuendo for those who wanted it. This is just an idea of something i could get in order for us to watch next semester. If you have a series or movie that you would like to bring in and have us show next semester, let me know what it is, and how long it is. This would be a good way to help set this club going on a good foot next semseter. Then again, we could just wait until the first meeting next semester to descide on what to show. Just throwing some ideas out. Well, hope to see you all on Friday.

Seventh Meeting

Seventh Meeting

At this meeting we watched the mind numbing and intriguing conclusion of Evangelion. The movie inthralled us all and caused us to go into a 30min conversation afterwards about many different religious aspects that were brought up in the film. It was a very injoyable meeting and we hope the rest of the semester wil be the same way. We have not yet decided what to watch yet but we are seeing how many meetings we have left and will decide on what series to see based on that.

Over the weekend, several of us helped run the anime table at the Japanese convention at the library. All of us who went had a blast and enjoyed seeing many different views on Japanese life and culture. Once we get a hold of some of the pictures that were taken at this event, we will post them and let you see what we saw. We all must give Aleia a pat on the back for being a good sport this weekend, even though she was being hit on by a very stange and crazy man *Shudders*. So at the meeting this week lets all give her a big hand and let her know we are here for her. (Sorry Aleia couldnt help myself.)

This week I will not be present due to the fact that I have a doctors appointment and then I will be spending the rest of the afternoon with my only other friend which I have not seen in a month. We have decided to show Steamboy this week since most of you who were at the meeting had not seen it and that it would be a good idea to show it. Well have a nice Halloween and I will see you all next week as we show the a quick series to tidy us over for the rest of the year.

Sixth Meeting

Sixth Meeting

Oops....forgot to put up this post over Fall Break. Well at this meeting we decided to watch 4 episodes and then this week we would watch the last two important episodes and then the movie. This meeting is going to start at 4:30-4:45 even though the posters still say 5:30. An email will be sent to let you know about these changes. At this weeks meeting we will also try to decide what show we would like to see next as well as who is going to be coming with us to help out on Saturday at the Japanese festival. If you want to help us, let us know Friday so that we can tell you when to meet us and set up a ride if you do not have the ability to get there on your own.
all episode guides come from http://www.animeinfo.org/featured/eva/evaanime.html.

19 - A Man's Fight/Introjection

In anger and frustration over seeing the broken and battered body of the Fourth Child, Shinji threatens to blow up Tokyo-3 with the self-destruct sequence of his EVA. When that fails, he tenders his immediate resignation from NERV as an EVA pilot, disgusted by the actions of his father. Shinji's "retirement", however, may be short-lived as another Angel threatens to endanger not only NERV, but all of Tokyo-3 and its innocent civilians in the Geo-Front shelters! Now Shinji must make a choice between his pride and his conscience, but little does he know that his decision will take him down a path from which there is no return.

20 - Weaving a Story II: Oral Stage

EVA Unit-01 has once again shown its enigmatic yet incredible power. However, Shinji has completely disappeared, almost without a trace, and NERV must work against time to find a solution to this latest dilemma. Misato and Ritsuko are on edge with each other as the fate of the Third Child hangs in the balance. However, it's more than Shinji's body that is on the line - it is his very soul, as he is forced to look inward and discover his reasons for existence, piloting an EVA, and his lack of hope for the world.

21 - He was Aware That he was Still a Child

In a desperate attempt at finding out the truth, Kaji takes a dangerous gamble that may very well cost him in a way that he surprisingly expects. In the process, the real story of Gendo and Fuyutsuki's past comes out, as well as that of Yui, Gendo's now-deceased wife. At the end of a century, a subtle love triangle had formed, but the Second Impact, and the events that would be put into motion afterwards, would change them forever. Even part of the hidden past of the First Child, Rei Ayanami, is revealed as a result of Kaji's bid for the complete and utter truth, but Misato may never forgive him for his deadly game of playing all the sides.

22 - Don't be.

Ever since EVA Unit-01's instability has become more and more apparent, Asuka's usual self-confidence has been going down. Upstaged again and again by the reluctant Shinji and without anyone to turn to, Asuka's buried past begins to come back and haunt her as the memories she tried to suppress come to her in her dreams. However, the latest Angel does far more than nudge with a half-remembered dream. Instead, it comes with a mental nightmare that may cripple Unit-02 and its pilot, forcing NERV to make a critical decision and sacrifice one of their greatest weapons.

We shall watch episodes 23 and 24 on Friday as well as the movie which was ment to take the place of these two episodes since these episodes were confusing and leave much to be desired. We hope to see you there, and if you have any series that you own that are 26 episodes long or shorter and would possible like to have it shown during the second half of the semester let me know.

Upcoming Japan Matsuri

Club members and the entire Lake community are invited to attend the annual Japan Matsuri presented by the Japan-America Society of San Antonio. The matsuri (or festival) runs Oct 22nd from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the San Antonio Central Public Library. The library is located at 600 Soledad street downtown. Map (bus routes, etc are on the library website above).

From OLLU, take Commerce/Dolorosa downtown to Soledad, then take a left and drive until you see a giant Enchilada Red building on your right. The parking garage is attached. Be sure that you have you ticket validated inside the library for an hour free parking!

Originally, we had been requested to man the Haiku table, where patrons would have rubber stamps and papers to make their own haiku cards, but that may have changed. The last email that I got from my contact indicated that we may get to have a table actually devoted to telling people a little about Anime and Manga. More info has been requested. Please let us know if you are going to go so we can watch for you. I'm driving, but I already have a full truck and I couldn't get a larger university vehicle as they were all reserved already by CSLV.

It should be a lot fun!

Anime at the Movies

Some of you may remember hearing me talk about wanting to have a meeting at Alamo Drafthouse so that we could watch some Anime movie. After that fell through, I started looking for an alternative. Today I was in touch with Casey at Fiesta 16 theater out on De Zavala road. I asked if there was any way she could tell me if they had any anime coming up. She said they usually get a list of upcoming movies on Mondays and that I could call back and talk with her Monday for more info. I explained how I'd like to bring the club out to one of their showings, and she said she thought that would be great.

So here's the question: is anyone interested in doing this? The cost for movies at F16 is usually about $7.50 - kind of steep on a college student's budget. I saw Metropolis there (subtitled of course) and I have to say that it was worth the $7.50 to see something like that on the biiiiiggg screen. Would you let me know by posting comments or via email whether anyone's interested? We might even be able to make this coincide with the banquet, if that's still in the plan for this year...

Thanks for your feedback!

Fifth meeting

Fifth Meeting

We had our 5th meeting on September 30th. At this meeting we more or less just talked a little and went straight to watching the show due to it being the week of Lakapalooza and not many showed up. At this meeting we got through five episodes, one of them being a recap of what had happened so far in the series.

all episode guides come from http://www.animeinfo.org/featured/eva/evaanime.html.

14 - Weaving a Story

NERV's supervising organization SEELE takes the time to review the actions since the appearance of the first Angel since the Second Impact. Observing logs, personal entires, and other accounts, they attempt to piece together the story as it has happened so far, and evaluate it. Gendo assures the council of mysterious men that they are well on their way to mankind's destiny. But SEELE will make their own judgement, and whether or not they come to the conclusion that Gendo has is another story entirely.

15 - Lie and Silence

Yet another wedding of an old college friend has Misato, Ritsuko, and Kaji thinking about their own futures and their lives, while Shinji and Gendo become strangely communicative with each other. A visit to Shinji's mother's grave serves to form an unusual bond between father and son. Meanwhile, Misato finally reveals her real reason for her attraction to Kaji, as the plot begins to thicken with part of NERV's secrets discovered underground.

16 - Sickness Unto Death, and.../Splitting of the Breast

Shinji is finally beginning to think he has the hang of piloting an Evangelion. His synchronization rating and self-esteem rises even higher with every compliment that he gets. However, all of that is erased in an instant as Shinji's new found confidence gets him entombed inside the latest Angel threat! Unable to escape and running only on internal life support, Shinji must now face his past and present pain, as well as his imminent death, while the rest of NERV scrambles to save him from the clutches of the most powerful Angel yet.

17 - The 4th Child/Fourth Children

NERV and the Marduk Report have finally found the Fourth Child and designated pilot for EVA Unit-03, and it is someone no one would have really expected. Shock and surprise ripple through just about everyone at NERV as news of the identity of the Fourth Child is spread. Shinji, seemingly the only one unaware of the true identity of the Fourth Child, continues as normal, finding out, among other things, that Kaji has a strange but relaxing pasttime. With the 2nd branch of NERV desotryed mysteriously, however, the relaxation won't last long.

18 - The Judgement of Life/Ambivalence

NERV is finally receiving EVA Unit-03, and eagerly places its new pilot inside for a seemingly routine sync test. But yet again, fate rears its ugly head as Unit-03 is taken over by an Angel, destroying the research facilities and wreaking havoc on Asuka and Rei as they try in vain to stop the rampaging EVA. Now it's up to Shinji to stop the Angel/EVA before it invades NERV HQ - but he'll have to make a decision to fight against someone he doesn't even know, but still feels a strang ebond with as a pilot. Gendo, however, doesn't feel the same, and he will do anything in order to protect the interests of NERV and of SEELE.

We only have 6 more major episodes left before we bring in the movie and show that instead of the last two episodes. The reason for this is because in the series the episodes are harder to understand and follow then the movie is. Plus the movie does a better job at ending the series then the series itself does. So at this meeting we will need to decide how many episodes to watch. We could do 3 and 3 at the next two meeting and watch the movie as is, or we can watch 4 or 5 this meeting and squeeze in the last episode or two with the movie at the next meeting. The other thing that will need to be talked about is wheter or not we want to have a meeting the Wenseday of Fall break or not. The final thing we need to discuss is what series we want to show during the second half of the semester. We can squuze in another 26 episode series or two 13 episode series, so I will bring in all my stuff again and you can bring in the series you have and would like to see and the group of us that shows up can vote on what we want to see. Most likely there will be only about nine of us there so we will think of a way to vote, I have one idea but well worry about that in two to three weeks. Well the next meeting will be tommorow October 7 at 5:20 in the Library room 102.

Fourth Meeting

Fourth Meeting

We had our fourth meeting on September 16th. At this meeting Darrell gave us a little bit more information about helping out at the Japanese festival at the San Antonio library that we will be participating in sometime in October. He plans on getting a van to trasport us there, that is if you dont want to drive on your own. If you would like to help us run the haiku table, let us know either through this blog, through email at umokej@lake.ollusa.edu, or at one of the meetings.

We also talked a little bit about the decorating of the armadillo for spirit week which is from the 26th-30th of September. We threw in some ideas and are currently working on putting it together. We then just talked a little bit about what has been going on around campus before we started up where we left off. This week we showed episodes 10-13.

all episode guides come from http://www.animeinfo.org/featured/eva/evaanime.html.

10 - Magma Diver

While Asuka adjusts to life in Japan and Misato struggles to keep the annoyingly charming Kaji out of her hair, an amazing discovery is found. NERV has a perfect opportunity when a developing Angel is found in the depths of a volcano. Seeking to retrieve an actual live sample for study, Asuka is sent with her EVA in a lava/heat resistent suit to investigate. But it takes some quick thinking on Asuka's part when the Angel decides to incubate faster than anticipated, breaking out of its energy cage and attacking the helplessly suspended EVA Unit-02.

11 - In the Still Darkness/The Day Tokyo-3 Stood Still

The power has been mysteriously cut off from NERV, and it couldn't have come at a worse time. Yet another Angel has made its appearance, attempting to burn its way down into the Geo-Front, and Rei, Shinji, and Asuka must make their way down to the depths of NERV where their Evangelions are kept, forced to use emergency ducts that descend underground. Meanwhile, the NERV staff struggles to prepare the Evangelions for a manual launch, racing against the Angel in an attempt to save Tokyo-3 from destruction.

12 - The Value of a Miracle Is/She Said "Don't Make Others Suffer for Your Personal Hatred"

Misato fights the demons of her past and her memories of the Second Impact, while a very powerful space-traveling Angel is detected descending on Tokyo-3. In the absence of Commander Ikari and Vice Commander Fuyutsuki, Misato has ultimate authority over NERV operations. But she must stave off her own personal hatred for the Angels in order to come up with a solution to the latest Angel attack, coming up with a tactical solution that puts all three EVAs and their pilots at the most gravest of risks.

13 - Angel Invasion/Lilliputian Hitcher

NERV has faced many outside Angel threats and has somehow managed to get through them all. But this time, the attack comes from within as a microscopic nanomachine network is the latest Angel to attempt to destroy NERV. With the Angel being too small and too risky for the giant Evangelions and their pilots to fight, it is now left to Dr. Ritsuko Akagi, Maya Ibuki, and the rest of the technical staff to defeat it. In order to stay on par with the Angel's superior mechanical knowledge, Ritsuko decides to employ the MAGI, the computer system developed by her mother, in order to finish the job. But with even the MAGI being infected by the Angel, Ritsuko is on borrowed time in order to eliminate the threat before it activates the irreversible self-destruct sequence that will level NERV HQ.

Our next meeting will be on September 23, at 5:20pm, in Library 102. We hope to see you there.

Third Meeting

Third Meeting

We had our third meeting on the 9th of September. At the meeting we started off by talking a little about entering in the decorate a dillo contest here at the lake during Spirit week, which I think runs from 26th-30th of September. After this we talked a little bit about how things were going befor showing episodes 7-9.

all episode guides come from http://www.animeinfo.org/featured/eva/evaanime.html.

7 - The Human Creation/A Human Work

Misato's somewhat insane plan to take out the last Angel has made the voice of NERV nay-sayers even louder, and this time, there's someone out there to oppose the Evangelion Project. A scientist unveils Jet Alone, an automated robot which can supposedly run more efficiently than the power-inhibited EVAs and perform just as well. At first, Ritsuko and Misato are abashed at being shown up by this new upstart project - but when "JA" goes out of control and threatens to destroy an entire city, only an Evangelion may be strong enough to stop it.

8 - Asuka Strikes!

Finally, NERV Japan is getting the first Production Model Evangelion into its hands via the UN Navy, along with its overconfident and somewhat brash pilot, Asuka Langley Soryu. As the future is seen in EVA Unit-02, the past is also represented in the appearance of a familiar person from Misato's past. But reunions and hopes are both interrupted when a sea-faring Angel appears to take on the fleet and its precious cargo. Asuka and Shinji must now test out the EVA Production Model - even if it's going to be in a real battle.

9 - With One Accord in a Flash/Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win!

Just a few days back from the long trip at sea, the Evangelions face their newest challenge yet - a powerful Angel that splits into two parts that attack in tandem. Seemingly invincible when separated, the Angel humiliates Asuka and Shinji in their first team battle. Misato, Ritsuko, and Kaji come up with the perfect countermeasure to the dual Angel - make the Evangelions fight in perfect sync, using dance music to make the process easier. But it's going to take a lot more than just music to get the likes of Shinji and Asuka working together, and Misato has to resort to extreme measures in order to get the job done.

Well we hope to see you at our next meeting on September 16th. At this meeting we will be talking about a few cultural things before we begin the presentation of the next 3 or 4 episodes.

Second Meeting

Second Meeting

We had our second meeting on September 2, where we started off by discussing a few things about the meal plans and why they are now the way they are. Darrell also presented us with our first event this year which will be going to a Japanese sort of festival down at the city library. There we will be running a haiku table. If you are interested in helping out let us know either by email or at one of the meetings. At this meeting we showed episodes 4-6, so if you missed it you can read up a little on it and catch up.

all episode guides come from http://www.animeinfo.org/featured/eva/evaanime.html.

4 - Rain, Escape, and Afterwards/Hedgehog's Dilemma

Dreading both those around him and himself, Shinji runs away from Misato, NERV, and life. Alone as he was before he is able to try and think through his reasons for piloting as well as decide on whether or not to return. In the meantime, NERV searches frantically for the lost EVA pilot, and finally finds him - but there is no sense of relief, only anger at his actions. Shinji now faces the termination of his short but turbulent employment with NERV, but he just might find a source of strength from two new friends.

5 - Rei, Beyond Her Heart/Rei I

Making a fresh start in NERV, Shinji now turns his attention to Rei Ayanami, his quiet and enigmatic fellow pilot who always seems to be alone and by herself - that is, except when she's talking with his father. Shinji begins to wonder about the relationship between Rei and his father, and especially about Rei's odd behavior in general. However, he has no time to process any of what he observes, because a new and deadly Angel makes an appearance - and Shinji is first hand receiver of its primary weapon.

6 - Showdown in Tokyo-3/Rei II

After being seriously injured at the hands of the Angel, Shinji is forced to pull back while NERV considers its options. Working against time, as the Angel drills to the Geo-Front below, Misato comes up with a last-ditch plan involving both EVAs and a highly experimental positron rifle that just may have the ability to eliminate the threat. Not only do both Rei and Shinji have to learn to work together, but they must also hold the entire power supply of Japan in their hands as they prepare for one last attempt at defeating the most powerful Angel yet.

Well we hope to see you at our next meeting on September 9, at 5:15 pm in the Library, room 102. Bring your dinner if you want, we usually dont start the meetings till about 5:30 anyway, so take your time. The only thing new that we can talk about at this meeting will be what Darrell and I learn from the RSO leadership event on Friday at 1:30 pm. If you find anything interesting that you want to talk about some at the meeting, bring it with you and well have fun. If you have been to either of the meetings, you probably have figured out that leaving the meeting is a hard thing to do (thanks to funny and entertaining stories).

First Meeting

Our first meeting on Friday the 26th, was both fun and entertaining. We discussed some issues such as why we had a limited set of anime that we could show this semester, and what could be done to increase the number of shows for next semester. We then began to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. We made it through three episodes before screwing around with the languages and having fun with listening to French and Spanish voiceovers. The people who where there can tell you it was very entertaining and funny. If you missed last meeting, I am posting an episode description of the first three episodes here so that you can read up on what you missed.

all episode guides come from http://www.animeinfo.org/featured/eva/evaanime.html. You can also go to this site for a more detailed summary and information about each and every episode. For right now we are just going over the first three that we showed.

Angel Attack (episode 1)

After 15 years of dormancy, the mysterious Angels, creatures that have threatened to destroy mankind in the past, have returned once again to wreak havoc. Not even the might of the combined UN forces are enough to stop the latest Angel from attacking Tokyo-3. In the midst of the chaos, 14-year old Shinji Ikari is told to meet his estranged father after years of separation. Knowing only that his father works for a branch of the Japanese government called NERV, he is met by Captain Misato Katsuragi and taken to their underground base. But what Shinji hasn't yet realized is that he has been called upon to be the embodiment of mankind's last hope in the Evangelions, NERV's top secret project and supposedly the only effective weapon against the Angels. Untrained and alone, Shinji must face a near-invincible Angel in his first battle.

2 - Unfamiliar Ceiling/The Beast (episode 2)

Shinji's first attempt at piloting an Evangelion goes awry as the Angel causes serious damage to it. Waking up in a hospital bed, Shinji struggles with his jumbled memories of his first battle as the city recovers from the damage incurred by both the Evangelion and the Angel. An enthusiastic Misato takes in the recovered Shinji to live with her rather than leave Shinji alone and to himself. As Misato warmly welcomes him into his new home, it seems that Shinji begins to feel a small glimmer of happiness for the first time since being called back by his father - until he recalls the dreadful battle and his horror at seeing the deadly capability and true face of the Evangelion he pilots.

3 - A Transfer/The Phone That Never Rings (episode 3)

Shinji learns more about piloting the Evangelions and continues his training, though he is hesitant to do so. Though he has been attending class at his new school, he is unable to make new friends. When it is found out that he is the pilot of an Evangelion, however, he gains many friends and admirers - as well as a couple of enemies. After a hostile encounter at school with a bitter fellow student, Shinji is forced to fight once again - this time against an Angel more powerful than the last. Shinji must forget the pain and hurt of what he has done and what he has gone through in order to defeat this new enemy...even if he is forced to protect the very people who hate him for what he is.

Well we hope to see you this Friday September 2 at 5:15 in the library room 102. We will talk a little about what went on at the SGA meeting this week as well as a event that Darrell got us signed up for. He will talk a little bit more about this event at the meeting on Friday. We hope to see you all then.

History

The Mizuumi Clan Anime Club was founded in 2003 by Sarah B, James M, and Michelle G - three Our Lady of the Lake University students with a common interest in Japanese Culture and Animation. Originally, the three approached the Japanese History teacher at the University to sponsor the organization, but she had too many prior committments and referred them to a staff member, Darrell H. He was only too happy to join as the sponsor, and thus was born OLLU's first special interest student organization focused on Japan.

After months of paperwork, constant contact with administrators and other students, and negotiations with the university's Student Government Association, the Mizuumi Clan became an officially Recognized Student Organization! The Mizuumi Clan is unique among RSOs in that it meets on a weekly basis. There are no dues or fees of any kind, and all members of the OLLU community are welcome to attend one or all meetings. The club normally has an end-of-year banquet to celebrate the successful completion of the academic year and to enjoy the company of fellow Clan members.

Welcome!

Welcome to the Mizuumi Clan Anime Club web site!
