Minutes for 08-28-08

The Mizuumi Anime Club’s first meeting of the semester went well last evening. We had 14 attendees. We followed the agenda pretty closely, interrupted only a few times by comic mischief. ^_^ In addition to a good talk about plans for Mizuumi-Con by con chair David Ramirez, we nominated members for, voted on, and formed the Constitution & By-laws Committee.

I’m pleased to report that the following five fine individuals have stepped up to take on the challenge of writing new documents to guide the club in the coming years. Thanks to all who agreed to be on the ballot. The five top vote getters were, in alphabetical order:

Sarah Aguero
Jose Luis De La Cruz
Erin Lynch
Christopher Pagonis
Jason Perez

The committee will meet first on Monday, September 1st to begin their work. Comments and suggestions sent to the club email account (mizuumi@lake.ollusa.edu) will be forwarded on to them. If you have ideas for the new constitution & by-laws, please send them in. A draft of the documents is to be turned in to me by September 9th, at which time I will make comments to the committee and post the draft to the website for members to review. We’ll have a discussion and review period at the next meeting on September 11th. The location is TBA, but I plan on getting the blue room again. If no major changes are made during the discussion period, members present will vote to ratify or reject the draft. Then we can get on to the fun part.

Q&A

Questions I've been asked lately, and answers too.

Q:I can't attend today, but I want to be on the Constitution & By-laws committee!
A: Just email mizuumi@lake.ollusa.edu and say you want to be on the ballot, and you will be.

Q: Will you be emailing minutes of meetings out?
A: No, but I will post them here on the site, and will encourage the new secretary to do the same.

Q: Will the regular meetings be on Thursday at 5:30?
A: Not necessarily. The new officers will plan those. If there is a time you particularly like or dislike, let us know.

Q: Will there be free food?
A: Not this time, but maybe in the future... ^_^

Fall 2008

Welcome to Fall 2008!

I'm looking forward to a great year this year, with some new ideas and a new direction for the club. We had a good Club Rush today, handing out AP comics to those who signed up for the mailing list and, of course, we had plenty of Lucky Candies to go around.

Members Jose Luis De La Cruz and Christopher Pagonis

We had 21 students sign up for the mailing list, and I'll be adding them tonight.

Tomorrow, August 28, 2008, we'll have our first meeting of the semester. This will be mostly a "business" meeting to start the work I talked about in my previous entry. The meeting will be at 5:30 pm in the Providence Hall Blue Room. All members of the OLLU community are welcome to attend. Printed agendas will be distributed, but here is a preview:

Once the Constitution and By-laws Committee has completed its work, and the new constitution and by-laws are approved, we will use the election procedure contained therein to conduct an election that is open and fair to all involved. I hope that can happen sometime in September, but I won't rush the work of the committee; we'll wait until things are in order to have an election.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting!

Mizuumi Restructuring

Members:

After a lengthy consultation with Campus Activities yesterday afternoon, it seems that there’s an urgent need to lay out a new roadmap for the future of the Mizuumi Anime Club. The term of the current president has ended and I thank him for his work to present new anime to our members that they could not have seen on American broadcast TV. Elections for new officers will not be held today as planned. Instead, we will begin a restructuring process that may take several months to complete.

It will be a long process to rebuild the club, but in the end, Mizuumi should have a good foundation upon which to build a strong and prosperous future. The process will have room for the input of all interested parties, and will be thoroughly chronicled on our website at http://mizuumi.org/.

One order of business will be to initiate a constitutional review. The review will be conducted by a committee selected by all present at the first meeting of the semester. These individuals, working together and with my assistance, will review all prior copies of the club’s constitution that have been filed with Campus Activities. The committee may choose to include portions of those constitutions, or they may choose to write a new constitution. Reviewing the constitutions of Anime clubs at other universities similar to OLLU will be very important to the process as well. Once the committee has crafted a constitution that thoroughly details the operations of the club, that constitution shall be presented to the members at a meeting and will be voted upon. If the club members present at that meeting ratify the constitution, it will then go into effect. If ratification doesn’t occur, the draft constitution will go back to the committee with any requested modifications from the membership, and the process will repeat until ratification occurs.

Once the new constitution is approved, we will use the election procedure contained therein to conduct an election that is open and fair to all involved. Unfortunately, this means that we likely won’t have elected officers until September, but we’ll just have to do the best we can until then.

For now, our immediate concern should be preparing for Club Rush. I’d like to know who might be interested in helping to staff the table for Club Rush. As I’m sure most of you remember, we typically have a table with anime and manga on display and we give away our trademark lucky candies. That event is on Wednesday August 27th, from 11:30-1:30. Club Rush is our best opportunity of the year to recruit new members, and we’ll need a few people to spend time at the table talking to new students.

We all share the same goal of a strong and prosperous club. I look forward to your input. Please comment on the website, or contact me via the club email account, mizuumi@lake.ollusa.edu.
